Great episode, it triggered 3 topics in my mind that I want to share:
1. I agree with your point about the purpose, it can lead to paralysis analysis. In my current role I also do change management, which is related to the getting practical part you mentioned. One of the first things we do is defining the current state, where are we. This is especially important for clarity and to manage resistance. From there we define the future state, also key for everyone to have that clear end goal. Only then we can design a transition state, so bridging the gap with a change management strategy to accompany that transition.
2. Another thing about the purpose, from a collaboration facilitation point. I have ran a few strategy signals in which people really miss this purpose, “why are we doing this” kind of thought process, but I think they just miss the “where do we want to get to” So before we do the goal setting for the 1 year framework, we do the same exercise but with a 3 year framework. I frame this exercise as much more inspirational than the 1 year one and at the end we get a type of vision… it has worked nicely to alleviate that existential question.
3. I am very curious about the EOS, if you decide to do it, it would be lovely if you could share it 🙌 It also triggered me about one of the exercises I do for roles and responsibilities. It is called RACI matrix, it is super simple to use. It is about identifying all the tasks/ topics that have unclarity, the more granular, the better. Then we define who is:
-Responsible (the person who executes)
-Accountable (the one who is ultimately accountable for completeness and/correctness)
-Consulted: who gives advice
-Informed: who needs to be kept up to date on changes, decisions, progress, etc.
Keeping this visually accessible leaves room for no ambiguity and it is a great tool to onboard new people.
Super long comment, I got inspired😅. I am happy to elaborate if you think any of these would be useful for your team 🙌
PS: I missed the chanting at the end of the episode 😂😇
